White Rock, B.C. – On May 27, the Elgin Park gym was transformed for the sixth Cycle4:ER. Led by Elgin Park students, Cycle4:ER is a community fundraiser that brings together community members of all ages to ride stationary bikes, or spin, for eight hours with their team, all in support of Peace Arch Hospital’s Emergency Department.

Thanks to the passionate hard work of these students, support from local businesses, and a generous matching gift, Cycle4:ER 2026 raised $105,000 to purchase critically-needed equipment for our ER. This transformational amount was made possible in part by Tiger Sun Charitable Foundation, who matched the first $50,000 of student’s donations at the event.

While the cycling began on May 27, the event didn’t start there. Since the end of September, Grade 11 and 12 Elgin Park students have been meeting every Monday to plan the event. Throughout the spring, students organized bake sales, car washes, pizza parties, and other fundraising initiatives, all while learning what it takes to bring a community event of this scale to life. By April, the excitement was building, and sign-ups opened.

After months of planning, 44 teams arrived at the event. From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., teams took turns on stationary bikes, riding in hourly shifts in support of our ER. To keep the energy high throughout the day, students planned a variety of themed hours, including Western Hour, where participants line danced, Travel Hour, where spinners cycled around the world, and Rave Hour, where the lights went out and throwback songs filled the gym. Every hour also featured prize draws, with gifts generously donated by local businesses.

The event also featured various “Can Do” speakers; Elgin alumni who returned to share their stories and inspire participants. These included NCAA basketball players, Team Canada softball Olympians, a cancer survivor, and more.

One student was especially proud of the day, noting, “This has been something we’ve put a lot of work into and we are so happy to see it all come together.”

Participants also wrote notes to PAH’s ER about what the department has done for them. Some shared stories of family members whose lives were saved, while others thanked staff for their kindness and compassion. Together, the notes showed the community’s appreciation and support for our ER.

“We want to show our hospital staff that despite the challenges that our healthcare systems face on a daily basis, our community is here for you and that we support them,” says Sue

The entire event was founded by Elgin Park phys-ed teacher, Sue Janzen, in 2008. The first Cycle4:ER was held in 2013, and to date, the event has raised more than $400,000 for our ER. This year’s event was particularly meaningful, as it marked Sue’s final Cycle4:ER before passing the torch to the next generation of leaders. “I’ll always be part of it in spirit,” says Sue, “but my hope is that the new generation will make it their own.”

For Sue, this event has always been about more than fundraising. “My hope is that through these Cycle4:ER events, our students and community build lasting friendships, learn from one another, and experience the kind of change they want to see,” says Sue.

We are so incredibly grateful to Sue, the Elgin students, sponsors, and every community member who helped make this event such a success. It is because of you that our ER teams can be equipped with the tools and equipment they need to provide exceptional care for our community.

“The Foundation is so grateful to be the beneficiary of this incredible youth event. The youth at this event reminded me that generosity isn’t something we grow into; it’s something we practice early, especially when we see the impact we can have on others. Thank you Sue and the entire Elgin Park team for inspiring youth leadership, community connection, and true generosity that thrives for generations to come.” – Stephanie Beck, CEO of PAHCHF.
