Mark Fiorito has been a part of our community for his entire life. His roots run deep. His parents moved to White Rock in the 1950s, and his father became one of the area’s first postmen in 1957. His grandmother even worked at Peace Arch Hospital in the original production kitchen, helping prep meals for patients.

With a family history grounded in service, Mark has always looked for ways to give back. As a longtime woodworker, he had an idea over 20 years ago to build a full-sized lamppost using cedar and copper. The idea came to him through inspiration, but the project hit a roadblock and was eventually set aside. Life moved on, retirement came, and then an unexpected challenge arrived: a cancer diagnosis.

After a year of treatment and surgery, Mark’s cancer is now in remission. As a way to express his deep gratitude for the care and support he received, he returned to his lamppost project and brought it to life. The result is a beautiful and meaningful work of art that he donated to Peace Arch Hospital Foundation. He named it the “Lamp of Hope.”

“I wanted to show my appreciation to all those who helped me on the road back to health. Thanks to PAHF’s campaigns and generous donations, the hospital has been able to greatly expand its ability to serve the community. I hope my lamppost brings enjoyment to all.” – Mark Fiorito

This heartfelt gift now stands proudly in the Werner & Helga Höing Tranquility Garden, nestled behind the George & Sylvia Melville Hospice. It is more than just a lamppost. It is a symbol of resilience, hope, and gratitude. For those who visit the garden, it offers a quiet place of reflection and a reminder that hope continues to shine, even in difficult times.

“We are a community of people who serve each other, so I am grateful to do something small to help give back to my community.” – Mark Fiorito

We are deeply honoured to receive this incredible donation. The Lamp of Hope will stand for generations to come, bringing light and joy to all who pass by. Thank you, Mark, for giving us this beacon of hope.
