Approximately 62,000 Canadians suffer a stroke each year…roughly one stroke every ten minutes.

Suffering a stroke can be a devastating, life-changing experience for a person. We know that these statistics could affect you, your neighbours, or someone you love. And it is safe to say that we do not take them lightly.

However, immediate treatment for a stroke followed by appropriate care in an acute stroke unit can reduce the likelihood of death and disability. There are also many medical tools available to help us improve stroke care in our community. This gives us hope.

Strokes are the third leading cause of death in Canada and the tenth largest contributor to lifelong disability.

A stroke happens when blood stops flowing to any part of the brain, which damages brain cells. The effects of a stroke depend on the part of the brain that is damaged, and the amount of damage done. When someone experiences a stroke, every second without care can impact the rest of their life.

New medical devices could mean the difference between someone suffering a devastating, life-changing stroke experience, or receiving the appropriate care when they need it most.

Below are the 3 pieces of equipment that our hospital desperately needs to increase our ability to care for those individuals who may suffer a stroke:

  • TELESTROKE VIDEO CONFERENCING SYSTEM: This extremely valuable system will help facilitate virtual stroke assessments and allow our Emergency Department to provide urgent assessment and specialized treatment to patients who are experiencing strokes at home. Using this, patients in our community will also have immediate access to stroke specialists at other hospitals, ensuring we provide timely access to the BEST care possible and life-saving treatments.
  • EMERGENCY SIMULATOR TABLET: This special training device can help our ER teams simulate high-pressure situations, practice stroke assessments, and provide stroke education. Simulation training is an extremely beneficial tool that can help our ER staff prepare and practice for the worst-case stroke scenarios, benefiting critical situations that may arise in the future.
  • VITAL SIGNS MONITOR: This device will help us monitor vital signs such as blood pressure and heart rate for patients suffering from stroke and other life-threatening conditions in the ER.
